// PROPULSION SYSTEMS AND ENGINE TECHNOLOGY TERM

Solid Rocket Motor

A solid rocket motor is a type of rocket engine that uses a solid mixture of fuel and oxidizer, called propellant, contained within a casing. Once ignited, it burns continuously until all the propellant is consumed, generating thrust without the need for pumps or complex plumbing.

TECHNICAL DEFINITION

A solid rocket motor (SRM) is a chemical propulsion device that generates thrust from the combustion of a pre-mixed, contained solid propellant grain, typically composed of a fuel and oxidizer composite or double-base mixture, which upon ignition expels hot gases through a nozzle; characterized by its simplicity, high thrust-to-weight ratio, and non-throttleable operation.

BACKGROUND

Skyroot Aerospace Private Limited is a private Indian aerospace manufacturer and commercial launch service provider headquartered in Hyderabad, Telangana. The company was founded by former engineers and scientists from ISRO.
