FFG-62
FFG-62 is the designation for the lead ship of the Constellation-class frigates, a new series of guided-missile warships for the U.S. Navy designed for multi-mission operations like anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.
TECHNICAL DEFINITION
FFG-62 denotes the lead ship and class designation for the Constellation-class frigates, a multi-mission guided-missile warship program by the U.S. Navy, derived from Fincantieri's FREMM frigate design, intended for fleet air defense, anti-surface warfare (ASuW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), and distributed maritime operations.
BACKGROUND
The Constellation is a class of multi-mission guided-missile frigates of the United States Navy based on the Italian Navy's version of the European multipurpose frigate or FREMM. Constellation follows the modular but troubled littoral combat ships of the Freedom and Independence classes. The U.S. Navy announced the FFG(X) frigate project in the United States Department of Defense's Request For Information (RFI) in July 2017.
