ERA
Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) is a type of vehicle protection consisting of explosive-filled tiles on the exterior of an armored vehicle. When struck by an incoming projectile, the tile explodes outward, disrupting the projectile's penetration and protecting the main armor.

TECHNICAL DEFINITION
Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) is a defensive system for armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) that uses explosive-filled modules to counter anti-tank munitions, particularly high-explosive anti-tank (HEAT) shaped charges. The counter-explosion from an ERA brick disrupts the molten metal jet of a HEAT warhead, reducing its penetration capability against the vehicle's base armor.
BACKGROUND
The Japan Self-Defense Forces are the military forces of Japan. The JSDF comprises the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. They are controlled by the Ministry of Defense with the Prime Minister as commander-in-chief.

USAGE NOTE
ERA is most effective against shaped-charge munitions like HEAT rounds but offers less protection against kinetic energy penetrators.
DEVELOPERS
Organizations developing technology related to ERA.
An Israeli defense technology company that pioneered Explosive Reactive Armor with its Blazer ERA package, first used in the 1982 Lebanon War. They continue to develop advanced armor systems.
A major US defense contractor that manufactures various survivability systems, including reactive armor tiles like the M19 Reactive Armor Tile used on the Bradley Fighting Vehicle.
A leading Russian research institute and manufacturer of armor materials. They are responsible for developing the widely-used Kontakt and Relikt families of ERA for Russian main battle tanks.
A US-based subsidiary of Leonardo S.p.A., they develop and manufacture survivability systems for military vehicles. Their products include the Abrams Reactive Tile (ARAT) systems for the M1 Abrams tank.
An Israeli defense electronics company that acquired IMI Systems, a key developer of armor solutions. Elbit continues to produce and innovate in vehicle protection, including passive and reactive armor packages.
A British multinational defense and aerospace company. They are involved in manufacturing and upgrading armored vehicles, often integrating advanced armor packages that include ERA components for enhanced protection.
An Israeli company specializing in survivability solutions and composite materials for military vehicles. They design advanced armor kits that often integrate various technologies, including reactive armor elements.
A major German defense contractor known for producing armored vehicles and advanced protection systems. They develop modular armor solutions that can include passive, reactive, and active protection elements.
