The core architecture combines PostgreSQL's query layer with a distributed document store inspired by Google Spanner, using Raft consensus for replication and automatic sharding across nodes. Yugabyte delivers multi-region active-active deployments with tunable consistency guarantees — strong consistency for financial transactions, eventual consistency for analytics — without requiring application-level coordination. The differentiation is operational: enterprises get global distribution without hiring distributed systems PhDs.
