// OVERVIEW

Confluent is the company that convinced enterprise architects that Apache Kafka — the open-source data streaming platform LinkedIn built and gave away for free — was worth paying $200,000 per year to run properly. The founders wrote Kafka, left LinkedIn, and built a commercial wrapper that captures margin from companies too risk-averse to run the free version themselves.

// FUNDING ROUNDS

// SECTORS SERVED

// TECHNOLOGY

Confluent provides managed Apache Kafka as a cloud service plus enterprise tooling for stream processing, data governance, and connector infrastructure. The core technology is open-source — Confluent's margin comes from operational expertise, compliance certification, and support contracts that enterprises prefer over hiring Kafka specialists. The platform processes real-time event streams at scale but the fundamental capability is available for free to anyone willing to operate it.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELDANGEROUS
network effects or regulatory capture, approach with caution

Confluent went public in June 2021 at a $10 billion valuation, peaked at $18 billion, and trades today at $4.5 billion after losing 75% from peak as enterprise software multiples corrected. The company generated $768 million in revenue in 2023 with a net loss of $186 million — profitable unit economics but still burning cash on expansion. Snowflake, Databricks, and AWS all offer competing managed streaming services and the question is whether Kafka expertise remains a durable moat or becomes commoditized infrastructure. The enterprise customer base is real — over 4,000 organizations including 80% of the Fortune 100 — but growth slowed from 58% in 2021 to 25% in 2023 as cloud hyperscalers built native alternatives.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The margin between open-source infrastructure and enterprise fear of operating it themselves is compressing as cloud platforms absorb streaming primitives. Confluent's $4.5 billion valuation assumes customers will keep paying for Kafka expertise that is increasingly embedded in the platforms they already rent.

// VALUATION NOTE

Confluent is PUBLIC not PRIVATE. Current market cap $4.5B represents 75% decline from $18B peak in late 2021. IPO valuation was $10B in June 2021.

VERDICT: DANGEROUS — APACHE KAFKA IS FREE, CONFLUENT CHARGES $200K/YEAR TO RUN IT, AND AWS KINESIS COSTS 40% LESS WITH TIGHTER CLOUD INTEGRATION
