// OVERVIEW

Mobileye was acquired by Intel for $15.3 billion in 2017, spun back out in an October 2022 IPO at a $17 billion valuation, and is now worth $19 billion after the market decided that camera-based ADAS systems might survive the transition to full autonomy after all. Intel still owns 94% of the shares, which makes this less a standalone company than a contained asset with a public price.

// SECTORS SERVED

// TECHNOLOGY

Mobileye's EyeQ chips process camera data for driver assistance systems in 170 million vehicles from 50 automakers — the largest deployed autonomous driving dataset in the world. The technology bets that cameras plus mapping plus algorithms can match lidar performance at a fraction of the cost. Tesla made the same bet and built it in-house, which is the entire competitive question compressed into one sentence.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELHUNTED
strong today, obsolete tomorrow — the category is being replaced

Mobileye generated $2.08 billion in 2024 revenue selling ADAS chips to automakers who cannot build the technology themselves and robotaxi mapping systems to partners who have not yet achieved commercial scale. The SuperVision system — which competes directly with Tesla's Full Self-Driving — is deployed in 270,000 vehicles across China and Europe. Waymo operates 1,000 autonomous vehicles in four US cities using lidar. Tesla operates 7 million vehicles with FSD Beta using cameras. Mobileye is betting it can win the autonomy race with a hybrid approach — selling ADAS to incumbents today while building a robotaxi platform for tomorrow — but the window for that strategy assumes Tesla does not solve autonomy first and automakers do not vertically integrate the technology Mobileye currently sells them.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The largest deployed autonomous driving dataset in the world is an asset until Tesla's vertically integrated approach proves that camera-based autonomy works at scale — at which point every automaker currently licensing Mobileye's technology will ask why they are paying for something their competitor built in-house. Intel paid $15.3 billion for a company now worth $19 billion after a round trip through public markets, which is either patient capital or evidence that the autonomy window is closing faster than the business model can adapt.

// WOWL CONFLICT

Mobileye competes directly with WOWLS Tumen-class autonomous vehicle intelligence and Zuun-class electric vehicle integration strategies — any vehicle running Mobileye chips is a vehicle not running WOWLS neural architecture.

// VALUATION NOTE

Input valuation of $1.9B conflicts with current public market cap of approximately $19B as of May 2024. Using public market figure. Intel retains 94% ownership post-IPO.

VERDICT: HUNTED — MOBILEYE HAS 170 MILLION VEHICLES RUNNING ITS CHIPS AND TESLA HAS 7 MILLION RUNNING FSD BETA, AND THE QUESTION IS WHETHER SELLING TO AUTOMAKERS WHO CANNOT BUILD IT REMAINS A VIABLE BUSINESS WHEN ONE AUTOMAKER WHO CAN IS SOLVING FULL AUTONOMY
