// OVERVIEW

Heap is a product analytics company that raised $200 million to solve the problem of retroactive event tracking — capturing user behavior automatically instead of requiring developers to instrument every click manually. Six years after that raise, the company has neither IPO'd nor disclosed revenue growth that would justify the $1.1 billion valuation, which tells you everything about how product analytics commoditized faster than Heap could build enterprise pricing power.

// TECHNOLOGY

Heap's core insight was autocapture — instrument once, query anything later, avoid the developer tax that made traditional analytics tools like Mixpanel and Amplitude painful to implement. The technology worked, the market validated it, and then Segment built retroactive tracking into its data routing layer and Google built it into Analytics 4 for free. What was differentiated in 2017 became table stakes by 2020.

should be dead, kept alive by insider rounds

Heap operates in the most brutal slice of the analytics market: competing with Amplitude and Mixpanel on features, Segment on data infrastructure, and Google Analytics on distribution and price. The company raised $200 million across multiple rounds including a $110 million Series C in 2019 and has not disclosed an exit, acquisition, or path to IPO in five years. Contentsquare acquired Heap in September 2023 for an undisclosed amount — analysts estimate the acquisition price was below the peak $1.1 billion valuation, making this a down-round exit disguised as strategic consolidation. The product analytics category consolidated around two outcomes: Amplitude went public at scale, and everyone else either sold at a discount or became features inside larger platforms.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

Heap is the canonical venture-bloated feature that mistook product-market fit for category leadership and discovered too late that autocapture was a vitamin feature in a market demanding painkiller pricing. The acquisition by Contentsquare is a case study in how late-stage capital can trap a company in valuation purgatory — too expensive to sell at a profit for investors, too small to IPO, too slow to outrun commoditization.

// VALUATION NOTE

Acquisition price undisclosed but market estimates suggest sale below peak $1.1B valuation based on lack of Contentsquare disclosure and Heap's revenue trajectory.

VERDICT: ZOMBIECORN — ACQUIRED BY CONTENTSQUARE IN SEPTEMBER 2023 FOR AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT ESTIMATED BELOW THE $1.1 BILLION PEAK VALUATION THAT $200 MILLION IN VENTURE CAPITAL FAILED TO JUSTIFY
