// OVERVIEW

Dremio spent a decade convincing data engineers that querying a data lake should feel like querying a data warehouse — and became a $2 billion company selling software that makes Snowflake's $700 million quarterly revenue look like the premium customers pay to avoid thinking about S3 buckets. The company built an open-source query engine that sits between analytics teams and their cloud storage, promising Snowflake performance at S3 economics, which is either the future of data infrastructure or a temporary arbitrage that disappears when Snowflake cuts prices.

// TECHNOLOGY

Dremio's core product is Apache Arrow-based lakehouse acceleration — a semantic layer and query optimizer that runs SQL directly against data lakes (S3, Azure Data Lake, HDFS) without requiring ETL into a proprietary warehouse format. The technology uses columnar in-memory processing, automatic query rewriting, and reflections (materialized views) to deliver sub-second query performance on petabyte-scale datasets stored in open formats like Parquet and Iceberg. The architectural bet: compute and storage separation is inevitable, and customers will eventually refuse to pay warehouse vendors to store copies of data they already own in cloud object storage.

// THREAT LEVELARMED
real revenue, real product, fighting better-resourced rivals

Dremio's entire value proposition rests on the spread between Snowflake's storage pricing ($40/TB/month with automatic markup) and S3 ($23/TB/month with no markup) — a 74% margin that Snowflake could eliminate with one pricing update if market pressure required it. The company raised $415 million through Series E in 2021 at peak data infrastructure valuations and now competes in a market where Databricks ($134 billion), Snowflake ($45 billion), and Google BigQuery are all converging on the same lakehouse architecture Dremio pioneered. The moat is adoption of Apache Iceberg table format and integration depth with existing BI tools, but Snowflake announced native Iceberg support in 2023 and Databricks ships it by default. Revenue is undisclosed, customer count is undisclosed, and the last public milestone was "100+ enterprise customers" in 2022 — opacity that suggests either early traction or stalled momentum.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The lakehouse architecture wars will be decided by whichever platform customers are already locked into — and Dremio is the only major player without a hyperscale cloud parent, existing data warehouse install base, or notebook-to-production workflow controlling the analytics stack. When Snowflake or Databricks decides independent lakehouse vendors are a threat worth pricing out of existence, Dremio becomes the test case.

// VALUATION NOTE

Last confirmed valuation $2B from January 2022 Series E. No subsequent funding rounds disclosed. Revenue figures never publicly reported.

VERDICT: ARMED — Dremio built a $2 billion business by exploiting the pricing gap between Snowflake warehouses and S3 storage, and the entire thesis requires Snowflake to keep charging customers 74% markup on data they already own rather than defending market share
