WOWLS! The Legend

Long ago, deep under the ground in Siberia, a secret pack of amazing creatures was waiting.

They were part wolf and part owl. They could run like wolves, fly like owls, and howl louder than thunder.

They were called the WOWLS!

This is the story of how the WOWLS were discovered, how they escaped into the world, and why they are ready to take on their biggest rivals: the Unicorns.

Grab your crayons and color the legend as you read!

Wowls vs. Unicorns

A Unicorn is a mythical horse with one straight horn on its forehead. People also use the word for a new company that is worth a lot of money.

A WOWL is a little-known but spectacular creature that is part owl and part wolf. A WOWL is also a bold new idea that comes out of nowhere and surprises the whole world!

Siberia, 1979

The year was 1979. In the snowy forests of Siberia, near a giant lake called Lake Baikal, a team of scientists set up a secret camp.

Their leader was Dr. Azakov. A tough general named Kopalov was in charge of keeping the camp safe.

The team had one big job: drill a hole deeper than anyone had ever drilled before. They wanted to study earthquakes and find out what was hidden deep inside the Earth.

STEM Fact: Lake Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. It holds about one-fifth of all the fresh lake and river water on Earth.

The Secret Camp

The camp was cold and very quiet. Snow piled up on the trucks and tents, and icicles hung from the tall metal drilling tower.

Day and night, the giant drill turned and turned, going deeper and deeper. Inside the tents, scientists watched blinking machines and spinning tape recorders.

Every folder in the camp was stamped TOP SECRET.

Nine Miles Down

The drill kept going until it was 14.4 kilometers down. That is about nine miles: deeper than the tallest mountain on Earth is high!

Down there it was boiling hot, and the rocks were squeezed so hard that water came out of them.

Then the drill broke through into a giant hidden cave.

The scientists lowered a special heat-proof microphone into the hole. They put on their headphones, and they listened...

STEM Fact: A borehole is a long, narrow hole drilled straight down into the Earth. The deeper you go, the hotter it gets and the harder the rocks push in.

What Did They Hear?

At first, the scientists were scared. The sounds coming up the hole sounded like screaming! Soon people were telling spooky stories about the deep, dark hole.

But Dr. Azakov listened carefully. These were not screams. They were animal sounds:

• YIPPING: quick, high calls to talk to the pack

• BARKING: loud warnings that say "stay away!"

• HOWLING: long, deep calls that travel through the caves The creatures were part wolf and part owl. The scientists gave them a new name: the WOWLS!

What Is a WOWL?

• Wolf body: strong, fast, and loyal to the pack

• Owl wings: silent flight and super night vision

• Wolf-Owl tail: steers like a rudder when they fly

• Pounce-flight: WOWLS sprint on four legs, then leap into the sky WOWLS are smart, brave, and they always look out for their pack. And they had been living deep underground for a very, very long time.

Sealed Away

General Kopalov was worried. He ordered the hole sealed shut with a thick lid of concrete and lead. The WOWLS had to stay underground, and the whole story was kept secret.

But the general made one big mistake. The borehole was not the only way out!

The Great Escape

Deep underground, long tunnels and caves connect places all around the world. The WOWLS' howls traveled through the rock, calling to packs everywhere. One by one, the WOWLS found their way up to the surface.

STEM Fact: Sound travels through solid rock about 17 times faster than it travels through air.

The Seven Packs

The WOWLS spread out across the world. Each pack made a new home:

• Tundra Pack (Siberia): thick winter coats and deep howls

• Urban Pack (Tokyo): dark feathers that blend with the city lights

• Fog Pack (London): wings so quiet no one hears them coming

• Steel Pack (New York): huge wings for flying between skyscrapers

• Sand Pack (Dubai): built for hot desert winds

• Canopy Pack (São Paulo): bright colors to hide in the jungle

• Reef Pack (Sydney): speedy fliers that skim over ocean waves Turn the page to meet each pack!

Learning New Tricks

Each pack changed to fit its new home. Thick fur for the snow.

Quiet wings for the fog. Bright feathers for the jungle. The WOWLS were amazing at adapting!

Some WOWLS even learned to fly with jet packs strapped to their backs.

STEM Fact: Lift is the upward push that keeps a flier in the air. Drag is the air pushing back. Big, wide wings like an owl's make lots of lift.

The Secret Workshops

WOWLS are very curious. When they found old, empty army bunkers, they did not break anything. They studied everything!

They read old engine books, figured out how radar works, and learned all about jets and rockets. Soon they built their very own jet pack: the WS-1 Scramjet Harness, which straps on between their wings.

STEM Fact: A scramjet is a jet engine with no spinning parts. It only works when it is already flying super fast, more than five times the speed of sound!

WOWLS vs. Unicorns

When the WOWLS reached the big cities, they saw something surprising: Unicorns everywhere! Unicorns on billboards. Unicorns on posters. Everybody was talking about the Unicorns.

Unicorns are shiny and famous. But WOWLS are brave, tough, and hard-working, and they never give up.

The WOWLS decided it was time for a race to see who was the greatest legend of all.

The rivalry had begun!

The Race to the Sky

The WOWLS love speed. With their jet packs, they could fly from New York to London in less than an hour!

They studied every kind of engine they could find, from jet engines to rockets to engines that might one day carry them all the way to the stars.

The Pack Has Arrived

Today, the WOWLS are out in the world. Some people look up and think they see airplanes or weather balloons.

But if you listen closely in cities like Tokyo, London, New York, and São Paulo, you might hear something special.

Not screaming. Not machines.

Howling!

The legend is no longer underground. The pack has arrived. Which side are you on?
