Terminal Phase
The terminal phase is the final stage of a missile's flight path where it closes in on its target, often involving precise guidance adjustments right before impact or interception. This is when the missile is nearest to its intended destination.
TECHNICAL DEFINITION
The terminal phase denotes the final segment of a missile's trajectory, characterized by its proximity to the target and the execution of critical terminal guidance maneuvers for accurate impact or intercept by the warhead. This phase is pivotal for anti-missile defense systems aiming for target destruction.
BACKGROUND
Glide Phase Interceptor (GPI) is a ship-launched, hit-to-kill missile now under development for the United States Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and Japan's Ministry of Defense. It is intended to destroy hypersonic glide vehicles while they are still maneuvering through the upper atmosphere, the so-called glide phase, at ranges and altitudes beyond the Navy's current SM-6 terminal-defense capability. GPI will be fired from the Mk 41 Vertical Launching System aboard Aegis-equipped destroyers and from Aegis Ashore batteries, integrating with the fleet's existing command-and-control architecture.

USAGE NOTE
In missile defense, successfully tracking and intercepting threats during their terminal phase is extremely challenging due to high speeds and evasive maneuvers.
