TECHNICAL DEFINITION

The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a Lockheed Martin-manufactured, conventional, solid-propellant, surface-to-surface ballistic missile, designated MGM-140/164/168, providing deep strike capabilities against high-value targets for the U.S. Army and its allies when launched from M270 MLRS or M142 HIMARS platforms.

BACKGROUND

The MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System is a short-range supersonic tactical ballistic missile designed and manufactured by the American defense company Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV), and later, through acquisitions, Lockheed Martin. The missile uses solid propellant and is 13 feet (4.0 m) long and 24 inches (610 mm) in diameter, and the longest-range variants can fly up to 190 miles (300 km). It can be fired from the tracked M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and the wheeled M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).
