TECHNICAL DEFINITION

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) is an astronautic operation where an astronaut exits a spacecraft into the vacuum of space, performing tasks like maintenance, repairs, or scientific experiments, necessitating a self-contained Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) for life support.

BACKGROUND

EVA Airways Corporation is an international airline headquartered in Taoyuan. It is one of the three largest airlines in Taiwan along with China Airlines and Starlux Airlines. The privately owned airline operates passenger and dedicated cargo services to over 40 international destinations in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. Its network fully consists of international routes, with no domestic routes. It is rated as a 5-star airline by Skytrax, and is the second largest airline based in Taiwan after China Airlines. EVA Air is headquartered at Taoyuan International Airport in Luzhu, Taoyuan. The company slogan is "Sharing the World, Flying Together".

USAGE NOTE

EVAs are essential for assembling and maintaining the International Space Station.

DEVELOPERS

Organizations developing technology related to EVA.

  • Collins Aerospace

A primary contractor for NASA's spacesuits for decades, including the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) used on the International Space Station. They are currently developing next-generation suits for future missions.

  • Axiom Space

Contracted by NASA to develop the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), the next-generation spacesuit for the Artemis lunar missions and future commercial space station operations.

  • ILC Dover

A specialized engineering and manufacturing company that produces the soft-goods components, such as the pressure garment and bladder, for NASA's spacesuits from the Apollo program to the current ISS and upcoming Artemis suits.

  • NASA

The United States' space agency which directs and funds the development of EVA technology, sets requirements for spacesuits and tools, and operates facilities like the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) for EVA training and hardware verification.

  • SpaceX

Developing its own Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suits for use in commercial spaceflight missions, such as the Polaris Dawn mission, which planned the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

  • Oceaneering

A key NASA contractor that provides mission support, hardware, and training for EVA. They design and build robotic systems and specialized tools used by astronauts during spacewalks.

  • Thales Alenia Space

A European aerospace manufacturer involved in developing pressurized modules for space stations (like the ISS and Lunar Gateway) that support EVA operations, including airlocks and robotic systems.

  • Blue Origin

Developing the Blue Moon lunar lander and other space systems that will require integrated EVA capabilities, including suits, airlocks, and tools for lunar surface operations.
