Sourcegraph
$2.6Bpaper valuation
// OVERVIEW
Sourcegraph built a $2.6 billion business by solving a problem that only exists because the other $2.6 billion businesses made codebases so large and fragmented that developers now spend more time searching for code than writing it. The product is search infrastructure for enterprises drowning in their own Git repositories — which makes it either essential developer infrastructure or a very expensive Band-Aid on organizational dysfunction.

Universal code search engine that indexes across multiple repositories, languages, and version control systems with semantic understanding powered by graph analysis. Code intelligence layer provides contextual navigation, batch changes, and automated refactoring across the entire codebase. The 2023 AI pivot added Cody, an LLM-powered coding assistant trained on the indexed codebase — essentially Copilot but with access to proprietary internal code.
// WOWLS ASSESSMENT
The core search product is legitimately good at what it does and large enterprises with 500+ repositories pay for it because manual code discovery at that scale is genuinely painful. The problem is that the market paying for enterprise code search infrastructure is substantially smaller than the valuation implies — maybe 2,000 companies globally have codebases large enough to justify the deployment cost. GitHub already offers native code search that handles 80% of use cases for free. The Cody AI assistant launched in 2023 positions Sourcegraph as an AI company but it is competing against GitHub Copilot's 1.8 million paid subscribers and 50,000+ enterprise deployments — and losing on distribution, training data quality, and developer mindshare. Revenue is estimated around $50-70 million annually, which puts the company at a 37-52x multiple on a product category where the total addressable market might max out at $500 million globally.
// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS
GitHub controls 100 million developer relationships and already ships native code search — the question is not whether Sourcegraph survives but whether Microsoft has simply chosen not to kill it yet. AI pivot to Cody came 18 months after Copilot captured the market.
