Axie Infinity runs on Ronin, Sky Mavis's own Ethereum sidechain built specifically to reduce transaction costs for breeding NFT creatures and battling other players. The Ronin Bridge connects to Ethereum mainnet to allow token withdrawals — the same bridge that North Korean hackers exploited in March 2022 to steal $625 million in what remains the largest DeFi hack in history. Sky Mavis patched the bridge, raised $150 million to reimburse users, and continues operating the sidechain that proved both the viability and the vulnerability of application-specific blockchains.
