// OVERVIEW

Relativity Space spent 8 years and $1.3 billion teaching robots to 3D print rockets. Then SpaceX launched Starship, demonstrated full reusability at scale, and made the entire premise of cheaper manufacturing through automation look like solving yesterday's problem with tomorrow's technology. Now Relativity has pivoted to Terran R—a medium-lift rocket competing in the exact market segment where SpaceX already has 80% share and declining marginal costs.

Relativity's Stargate printers use directed energy deposition and wire-arc additive manufacturing to print rocket structures from raw aluminum alloy, reducing part count from 100,000+ to under 1,000 and theoretically enabling rapid iteration. The technology works—Terran 1 reached space on its third attempt in March 2023. The problem is that printing rockets faster does not matter if reusing them is faster still, and Relativity's expendable medium-lift Terran R competes directly against Falcon 9's reusable economics that have been operationally validated across 300+ flights.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELPAPER TIGER
no revenue foundation, one bad quarter from crisis

Relativity raised $1.3 billion to automate rocket manufacturing, successfully demonstrated the technology, then immediately pivoted away from it to build Terran R—a conventional medium-lift vehicle that happens to use printed parts but competes in the segment where SpaceX has 67 launches booked and costs declining toward $20M per flight. The original thesis was that 3D printing would enable orders-of-magnitude faster iteration than traditional aerospace—Tim Ellis claimed factory-to-orbit in 60 days. That advantage evaporates when your competitor reuses the same booster 20 times and your customer still throws your rocket away after one flight. The $4.2 billion valuation prices in a future where customers pay a premium for domestic manufacturing flexibility and reduced supply chain risk, but the actual contract pipeline remains thin and the first Terran R flight is not scheduled until 2026—by which time Starship may be operational and Neutron flying.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The valuation assumes aerospace customers will pay for manufacturing speed and supply chain resilience, but the DOD and commercial satellite operators have consistently chosen SpaceX's proven reusable economics over every alternative pitch. Relativity burned through Series E capital demonstrating a technology whose competitive advantage disappeared the moment Falcon 9 Block 5 reached 15+ reuses per booster.

// WOWL CONFLICT

Direct conflict with WOWLS Tumen-class hypersonic and orbital logistics ambitions—Relativity occupies the exact medium-lift launch segment where WOWLS rapid-response orbital capability would compete, and their Long Beach facility represents prime aerospace manufacturing infrastructure.

// VALUATION NOTE

Series E valuation from June 2021 at peak SPAC-era aerospace enthusiasm. No recent funding rounds disclosed. Actual current valuation likely materially lower given Terran 1 cancellation and Terran R delays.

VERDICT: PAPER TIGER — SPENT $1.3 BILLION PROVING 3D-PRINTED ROCKETS WORK, THEN PIVOTED TO COMPETE DIRECTLY AGAINST SPACEX IN THE ONE SEGMENT WHERE REUSABILITY HAS ALREADY WON
