Pure Storage builds all-flash storage arrays using commodity NVMe drives and proprietary data reduction software that compresses and deduplicates data before writing it to disk. The actual innovation is not the flash — everyone has flash — it is the software layer that makes flash arrays economically viable by storing 5-10x more data per terabyte of physical capacity. The hardware is a Dell server with Pure's software stack, which means the moat is entirely in the data services layer and the switching costs of migrating petabytes of production storage.
