// OVERVIEW

Prosper Marketplace was the first peer-to-peer lending platform in the United States, launched in 2006 with a vision of democratizing credit by letting individuals fund each other's loans directly. What actually happened is that retail investors got replaced by institutional capital, peer-to-peer became a marketing fiction, and the company that invented the category now watches LendingClub trade at $1.2 billion while sitting on a $1.9 billion private valuation it achieved in 2015.

Prosper's credit scoring algorithms assess borrower risk and price unsecured personal loans from $2,000 to $50,000. The platform assigns proprietary risk ratings and facilitates loan origination, then sells the loans to institutional investors who provide the actual capital. The peer-to-peer mechanism that defined the founding vision now accounts for less than 5% of funding volume.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELTERMINAL HYPE
peak valuation passed, smart money already left

Prosper originated $20 billion in loans through 2023 and generates revenue from origination fees and loan servicing, but the fundamental problem is that it became a loan origination marketplace in a world where banks can originate loans themselves at lower cost. LendingClub went public in 2014 at $8.9 billion, crashed to $400 million by 2020, then acquired Radius Bank and rebuilt to $1.2 billion as an actual bank. Prosper stayed private, stayed a marketplace, and has not raised external capital since the 2015 round that set the $1.9 billion mark. The company laid off 28% of staff in 2023 citing market conditions and tightening credit.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

Because watching the category pioneer sit on a 2015 valuation while laying off staff and losing market share to a competitor that publicly admitted the original business model was structurally flawed is exactly the kind of denial that makes for clean kills.

// VALUATION NOTE

The $1.9B valuation dates to a 2015 Series F round. No subsequent external funding rounds have been reported, suggesting the valuation reflects peak fintech hype rather than current market reality.

VERDICT: TERMINAL HYPE — THE COMPANY THAT INVENTED PEER-TO-PEER LENDING IN 2006 HAS NOT RAISED EXTERNAL CAPITAL SINCE 2015 WHILE ITS PUBLIC COMPETITOR ABANDONED THE MODEL AND BOUGHT A BANKING LICENSE
