Membership management and recurring billing infrastructure with creator analytics, tiered access controls, and content delivery. The technical differentiation has narrowed to near-zero as Stripe Billing became commoditized and every CMS added native subscription modules. The product is competent but no longer defensibly superior to open-source alternatives that creators can deploy in an afternoon.

Patreon collected $1 billion in creator earnings in 2023 and kept $80-120 million of it as platform fees, which sounds impressive until you realize Substack processed similar volume at half the take rate and Ghost exists as a non-profit charging $9/month flat regardless of creator revenue. The company raised $413 million at a $4 billion valuation in September 2021 when zero interest rates made paying 1000x revenue multiples for recurring billing seem reasonable. Since then macro turned, Substack raised $65 million at $650 million and offered effectively the same product with better writer economics, and the uncomfortable truth emerged that Patreon's moat was timing not technology. The 8% platform fee made sense when self-hosting was hard — it makes less sense now that a creator can deploy Ghost on a $6/month VPS and keep 97% instead of 88%.
