MuleSoft
$1.5Bmarket cap
// OVERVIEW
MuleSoft was a $6.5 billion acquisition that Salesforce paid for in 2018 to solve a problem it created — the more enterprise software you sell, the more integration hell you create, and MuleSoft sold the shovels for digging out. The company IPO'd at $2.9 billion in March 2018 and lasted four months as a public company before Salesforce wrote the check.

MuleSoft built an API-led integration platform that connects enterprise applications, data sources, and legacy systems through reusable APIs and pre-built connectors. The Anypoint Platform provides design, deployment, and management tools for integration workflows — essentially middleware that lets a bank's 1987 mainframe talk to a 2024 SaaS product without custom code for every connection.
// WOWLS ASSESSMENT
MuleSoft solved a real enterprise pain point — system integration — and did it well enough to reach $300 million ARR by 2018. Salesforce acquired it to become the plumbing beneath its own ecosystem and to prevent competitors from owning the integration layer. The $6.5 billion price was 22x revenue and represented Salesforce's recognition that whoever controls integration middleware controls enterprise IT architecture decisions. Five years post-acquisition MuleSoft is embedded in Salesforce's Integration Cloud offering, which means it succeeded as a strategic acquisition even if the standalone equity story ended before it matured. The company validated that API management and integration-as-a-service could command enterprise budgets — a market now worth $50 billion annually with competitors including Workato, Boomi, and Celigo fighting over the pieces Salesforce did not absorb.
// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS
MuleSoft is a case study in successful strategic acquisition timing — IPO as price discovery mechanism, acquisition as logical endpoint. The 22x revenue multiple Salesforce paid validated that enterprise integration platforms could command SaaS-level valuations despite being infrastructure rather than user-facing applications.
// VALUATION NOTE
Input data lists $1.5B valuation but this appears outdated. MuleSoft IPO'd at $2.9B market cap in March 2018 and was acquired by Salesforce for $6.5B in May 2018. No longer exists as independent entity.
VERDICT: ZOMBIECORN — MULESOFT IPO'D AT $2.9 BILLION IN MARCH 2018 AND SALESFORCE BOUGHT IT FOUR MONTHS LATER FOR $6.5 BILLION, WHICH TELLS YOU EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW QUICKLY STRATEGIC BUYERS MOVE WHEN INTEGRATION MIDDLEWARE BECOMES A COMPETITIVE MOAT ISSUE
