// OVERVIEW

Mobike spent $900 million teaching Chinese cities that dockless bike-sharing was the future of urban mobility, then discovered the unit economics required users to ride 300 times before the bike paid for itself, then got acquired by Meituan for $2.7 billion and quietly dismantled. The company that once deployed 9 million bikes across 200 cities now operates as a minor feature inside a food delivery super-app.

// TECHNOLOGY

GPS-enabled smart locks, IoT sensors, and a mobile app that turned any sidewalk into a bike rack. The innovation was eliminating docking stations — the catastrophe was eliminating any mechanism to prevent theft, vandalism, and bike graveyards blocking entire intersections.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELZOMBIECORN
should be dead, kept alive by insider rounds

At peak Mobike had 200 million registered users and burned through investor capital at a rate that made WeWork look disciplined. The business model required each bike to generate $300 in revenue to break even — actual revenue per bike was closer to $50 before the bike was stolen, stripped for parts, or thrown into the Huangpu River. Meituan acquired the company in 2018 not for the bikes but for the user data and local logistics infrastructure, then systematically wound down the international expansion and bike manufacturing. Today Mobike exists primarily as a minor tab inside the Meituan app serving Beijing and a handful of tier-one Chinese cities — the 9 million bikes became 2 million, the 200 cities became 20, and the $3 billion valuation became a cautionary tale about confusing viral adoption with sustainable business models.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The corpse teaches a lesson more valuable than the company ever was: viral adoption without unit economics is just expensive performance art. Meituan paid $2.7 billion for the user data and got a logistics degree in what not to do.

// WOWL CONFLICT

Zuun class electric micromobility — WOWLS builds vehicles people want to own, not disposable IoT trash that ends up in rivers after 60 days of vandalism.

// VALUATION NOTE

Peak private valuation $3B based on 2017 Series E. Acquired by Meituan for $2.7B in April 2018 — a 10% discount that marked the beginning of the bike-sharing collapse.

VERDICT: ZOMBIECORN — MOBIKE PROVED THAT GETTING 200 MILLION PEOPLE TO TRY YOUR PRODUCT FOR FREE IS NOT THE SAME AS BUILDING A BUSINESS WORTH $3 BILLION
