Lyft operates the same dispatch algorithm, driver matching system, and surge pricing engine as Uber. The technical differentiation that once existed — a slightly friendlier brand, pink mustaches, tipping drivers before Uber did — has been completely eroded. Both apps now offer identical core functionality, identical payment flows, and nearly identical driver economics in the markets where they compete.

The 73% market share gap between Uber and Lyft in the US has been stable since 2020 — neither closing nor widening — which means Lyft's entire strategic thesis is defending second place in a commodity market where the only variable is price. The company finally turned GAAP profitable in Q4 2023, posted $1.2 billion in adjusted EBITDA on $4.4 billion in revenue for 2024, and the market rewarded this by valuing it at 1.4x revenue while Uber trades at 3.4x. The gap is not explained by profitability — both are now profitable. It is explained by optionality. Uber has seven different levers to pull if ride-hailing margin compresses. Lyft has one.
