Klaviyo built a CDP that ingests e-commerce transaction data and triggers automated email and SMS campaigns based on customer behavior — abandoned carts, browse history, purchase recency. The technical moat is the depth of Shopify integration and the behavioral prediction models trained on billions of e-commerce transactions. The product is genuinely better than Mailchimp for transactional commerce, which is why merchants tolerate the pricing.

Klaviyo generated $773 million revenue in 2024 and trades at 12x revenue — reasonable for a 33% YoY grower with positive operating income. The problem is that 90% of revenue comes from small and mid-sized e-commerce merchants, and that customer base is fighting 30% CAC inflation and 8% conversion rate compression as iOS privacy changes broke performance marketing. When Shopify merchants hurt, marketing budgets compress first. The company went public in September 2023 at $9.2 billion and currently trades below IPO price after discovering that being the best email tool for struggling DTC brands is a revenue ceiling not a growth story. HubSpot owns enterprise, Salesforce owns Fortune 500, Braze owns mobile-first — Klaviyo owns Shopify longtail, and that segment's margins are eroding in real time.
