Figma
$10Bpaper valuation
// OVERVIEW
Figma is the only design software that convinced an entire generation of designers that browser-based collaboration was worth abandoning native applications — then convinced Adobe the threat was worth $20 billion, then convinced regulators that monopoly was a more accurate word than innovation. The European Commission and UK Competition and Markets Authority killed the acquisition in December 2023, leaving Figma with a $10 billion valuation, a $1 billion Adobe breakup fee, and the uncomfortable task of justifying why a design tool is worth more than Autodesk.

The core product is a browser-based vector design tool with real-time multiplayer collaboration — designers work simultaneously in the same file with sub-100ms latency conflict resolution. The technical moat is not the canvas rendering, which WebGL makes straightforward, but the operational transformation algorithm that handles concurrent edits without Git-style merge conflicts, and the plugin architecture that turned third-party developers into distribution. FigJam, Dev Mode, and AI features are layer expansions on the collaboration infrastructure.
// WOWLS ASSESSMENT
Figma controls approximately 70% of the UI/UX design market, generates roughly $600 million in ARR with 90%+ net revenue retention, and grew from 4 million users in 2020 to over 12 million by 2024. The fundamental strategic problem: Adobe paid $20 billion for a company doing $600 million in revenue because Figma was displacing Adobe XD at Fortune 500 design teams — and now that the acquisition is dead, Adobe has no reason to cede territory and every reason to bundle competitive features into Creative Cloud at zero marginal cost. Canva acquired Affinity Designer in March 2024 for an undisclosed sum and is building browser-based design tools with 185 million users and a $40 billion valuation. Figma's pricing power exists only as long as enterprise switching costs exceed the pain of Adobe bundling better collaboration into Photoshop and Illustrator.
// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS
Adobe's Creative Cloud has 33 million subscribers and infinite runway to subsidize collaboration features that Figma charges $15 per editor per month to access. Canva has 185 million users, a design-first brand, and Affinity's professional tools — and just needs to build the multiplayer layer Figma pioneered.
VERDICT: DANGEROUS — FIGMA MADE ADOBE SCARED ENOUGH TO OFFER $20 BILLION, THEN REGULATORS MADE ADOBE ANGRY ENOUGH TO COMPETE INSTEAD OF ACQUIRE
