DouYu built a live streaming platform optimized for Chinese gaming culture — low-latency video infrastructure, virtual gifting monetization, esports tournament integration. The technology worked well enough to attract 6.4 million paying subscribers at peak and generate $1.4 billion in annual revenue. None of that technology survived contact with Beijing's 2021 crackdown on gaming streaming content and minor protection regulations.

DouYu lost 40% of its market cap between IPO and delisting as Chinese regulators systematically dismantled the business model — banning minors from tipping streamers, limiting gaming content hours, forcing platform consolidation. The attempted merger with Huya — China's largest game streaming platform — was blocked by antitrust regulators in 2021, leaving DouYu trapped between regulatory pressure and a larger competitor it cannot acquire or outgrow.
