dbt Labs
$4.2Bpaper valuation
// OVERVIEW
dbt Labs convinced an entire generation of data engineers that writing SQL transformations in version control was worth being passionate about — and turned that passion into a $4.2 billion business built on top of infrastructure it does not own. The company created the category of analytics engineering by making data transformation feel like software development, complete with testing, documentation, and pull requests, then discovered that the infrastructure layer beneath it — Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery — captures most of the economic value.

dbt (data build tool) is an open-source command-line tool that lets analysts and engineers transform data in warehouses using SQL and Jinja templating, with built-in testing, version control integration, and DAG-based dependency management. The company offers dbt Cloud, a hosted orchestration and IDE layer on top of the open-source core. The technical differentiation is minimal — it is SQL with macros — but the workflow and community are genuine.
// WOWLS ASSESSMENT
dbt Labs built a $4.2 billion valuation on a tool that sits between customers and their data warehouses but does not own the warehouse, the compute, or the storage. Snowflake and Databricks — the platforms where dbt workloads actually run — are both building native transformation capabilities that replicate dbt's core functionality, and customers already pay those vendors 10-50x more than they pay dbt Labs. The open-source core remains popular but the cloud product's pricing model — usage-based on top of already usage-based warehouse costs — creates sticker shock at enterprise scale. The company raised $414 million through Series D in 2022 at peak data infrastructure multiples and now faces a market where transformation-as-a-service looks increasingly like a feature not a platform.
// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS
The open-source moat is real but monetization sits in the crosshairs of platform bundling. When Snowflake offers native dbt-equivalent transformation at zero incremental cost, the $4.2 billion valuation requires believing enterprises will pay separately for what their warehouse already includes.
VERDICT: ARMED — DBT LABS BUILT A $4.2B BUSINESS ON TOP OF SNOWFLAKE AND DATABRICKS, WHICH ARE NOW BOTH BUILDING THE EXACT FUNCTIONALITY DBT PROVIDES, AND CUSTOMERS ALREADY PAY THOSE PLATFORMS 10-50X MORE
