// OVERVIEW

Coursera spent a decade convincing universities to put their courses online for free, then spent the next five years convincing those same universities to let it monetize the certificates — a business model that generates $630 million in annual revenue but cannot explain why a degree from the University of Illinois costs $22,000 on Coursera and $60,000 on campus. The company went public at $5.3 billion in March 2021 and is now worth $1.5 billion, a 72% correction that accurately reflects what happens when the pandemic Zoom school premium evaporates.

Coursera is a video streaming platform with assessment tools — MOOCs delivered through standard web infrastructure with adaptive quizzing and peer-graded assignments. The technology is unremarkable. The real asset is partnership agreements with 325 universities and 150 corporations that provide course content and credential legitimacy — relationships competitors cannot replicate overnight but also cannot be defended if the universities decide to build direct-to-consumer offerings or if generative AI tutors replace structured courses entirely.

// THREAT LEVELTERMINAL HYPE
peak valuation passed, smart money already left

The company has 148 million registered learners but only 3.7 million paying customers, a 2.5% conversion rate that defines the entire challenge. Revenue grew 17% in 2023 but operating margin is -12% — Coursera loses money on each cohort-based degree program it sells and subsidizes the loss with corporate training subscriptions that carry 70% gross margins but face direct competition from LinkedIn Learning, Udemy Business, and now enterprise ChatGPT deployments. The $22,000 online master's degree from a top-20 university is either the most disruptive pricing in higher education or proof that employers do not value the credential enough to pay traditional tuition. YouTube has more educational content, costs nothing, and does not require proctored exams — the question is whether structured credentialing commands a premium worth $1.5 billion or whether AI-generated personalized curricula make the MOOC model look like correspondence courses in the streaming era.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

The 72% valuation correction since IPO is not the floor — it is the acknowledgment that MOOC economics never worked and generative AI makes structured online courses obsolete. 148 million registered users converting at 2.5% is not a funnel problem, it is evidence that free YouTube lectures are sufficient for learning and $50 certificates are insufficient for employment.

VERDICT: TERMINAL HYPE — COURSERA WENT PUBLIC AT $5.3 BILLION DURING PANDEMIC REMOTE LEARNING PEAK AND IS NOW WORTH $1.5 BILLION BECAUSE NOBODY WANTS TO ZOOM SCHOOL ANYMORE AND CHATGPT TUTORS FOR FREE
