// OVERVIEW

Aiways spent seven years and $1.6 billion convincing European rental fleets to buy Chinese electric SUVs nobody else wanted to purchase, filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 with ¥5.2 billion in debt, and is now a case study in how NOT to enter the European EV market. The company shipped roughly 15,000 vehicles total before collapse — BYD ships that many EVs every 18 hours.

Aiways built a modular EV platform called MAS (More Adaptable Structure) that promised flexible battery configurations and simplified manufacturing. The U5 SUV delivered 400km WLTP range from a 63kWh pack — competitive on paper in 2020, obsolete by 2023. The technology was adequate but commoditized — nothing Aiways built justified premium pricing or brand loyalty in markets where VW, Tesla, and BYD were already entrenched.

// WOWLS ASSESSMENT

// THREAT LEVELZOMBIECORN
should be dead, kept alive by insider rounds

Aiways entered Europe in 2020 targeting rental fleets and subscription services rather than retail buyers — a distribution strategy that generated revenue without brand equity. By 2023 the rental partners were liquidating inventory at steep discounts because consumers returned the cars and never considered buying them. The company burned through investor capital trying to scale production at a Shangrao facility designed for 150,000 units annually while actual output peaked at 6,000 vehicles in 2022. Cash ran out in early 2024, suppliers filed liens, and the Jiangxi bankruptcy court accepted the filing in March. Peak private valuation of $1.6 billion was based on 2019-era projections that assumed European demand for unproven Chinese EV brands — an assumption that died when Tesla cut Model 3 prices and BYD entered with better vehicles at lower cost.

// WHY WOWLS HUNTS THIS

Because it is a perfect specimen of 2017-2019 Chinese EV optimism — capital deployed into manufacturing capacity before demand validation, European ambitions without European brand credibility, and a rental-fleet distribution strategy that mistook volume for traction. The carcass contains lessons.

// WOWL CONFLICT

Direct conflict — Aiways attempted the exact market entry strategy WOWLS Zuun-class vehicles are designed to execute correctly: premium Chinese EVs in European markets. Studying this failure improves WOWLS probability of success.

// VALUATION NOTE

Peak $1.6B valuation appears to be from 2019 Series B. Company declared bankruptcy March 2024 with ¥5.2B debt and zero recovery value for equity holders.

VERDICT: ZOMBIECORN — Aiways shipped 15,000 total vehicles across seven years and declared bankruptcy owing ¥5.2 billion, which means each car produced cost approximately $230,000 in investor capital to manufacture and fail to sell
