The Lake Baikal Incident, 1979
First contact event — classified until 2031
On the night of 14 October 1979, Soviet acoustic monitoring station BR-114 logged a sustained sub-harmonic pulse from beneath the Olkhon trench. Within seventy-two hours, the lake's entire pelagic biomass had reorganized along magnetic field lines. The incident is the founding datum of the WOWLS xenobiological program and the unspoken cause of the Cold War's second wind.
